Caesar is a BIG,
pretty, sound and healthy 7-year-old draft-cross gelding. He was
professionally started under saddle last year at 6 and according to
his trainer, was really fun to work with. When he first arrived to be
started under saddle he was
very chubby (he has never foundered) and no saddle would fit him, so
initially he was put on a diet and exercise regime. He received ground-work
5 days a week including learning some nice manners, tying, hobbling, leading, lunging,
loading and unloading from a trailer, and learning to yield his
hind-quarters, side-pass and haunch turn from the ground. He also was
ponied in the arena and down the country roads. Caesar was started
bitless and bareback for several weeks before the right saddle with a
10" gullet was located, and advanced into a snaffle bit during the last
month of his training. Caesar never attempted to
buck, rear, strike or bite nor did he act fearful of equipment nor
handlers. Caesar enjoys being with people and is very curious in nature
as well as very noble. He was an excellent student who learned quickly
and tried hard to please.
At the end of his 60-days with the trainer, Caesar had learned to whoa
on a voice command (ground and under saddle); follow his nose with a soft, easy rein; walk, trot
and canter both leads; do a nice balanced haunch turn; hip yields; and
side pass in both directions. He has a beginning level of collection and
flexion and a soft sensitive mouth. His trainer says Caesar is very
athletic with a nice
walk, soft easy-to-set jog, and very comfortable canter. As a break from
arena work, he also spent time out on the trails where he wasn't spooky,
never refused an obstacle and was not afraid to go first. He has a very
perky personality and loves to watch what is going on around him and was
always begging to be ridden more! He has a good work ethic and is not 'hot'
but not lazy either. His owner would like him to secure a home where he
can receive further training so he is not wasted by continuing to stand
around in someone else's field. Caesar is not a plodder to just schlub around the farm on... he has the talent
for dressage and would be excellent at organized trail events and even
cattle sorting or ranch ropings. He will be enjoyed by an intermediate or
confident amateur rider who wants to
work with a FUN horse. Caesar lives by Lebanon, Oregon, and
his trainer will be glad to discuss him with any serious parties.
Although he has not been ridden since March 2011, his trainer feels he
will not be difficult to restart and foresees no problems. Caesar is
chubby once again, so will need to be reconditioned and slimmed down
before a saddle will fit him.
